The state of NC doesn't have a domestic violence divorce law. In this state we must remain married to our abusers for one year before we can file for a divorce. I feel this needs to be changed in order for us to bring a closure to the abuse that we have suffered in our marriage. Staying married to our abusers makes it easier to go back to them during that one year waiting period.
I have been working with the state legislature in getting this law changed. This new law will not benefit me in any way...but it will help other women who are facing abuse. I pray that this law will be passed and that our state will not let us down in this matter.. This isn't a law that is to grant just any one a quick divorce...but only to those where there is proof that domestic violence has accured during the course of the marriage.
